Do we need to know the origins and insertions for each muscle?
The short answer is "yes." You are, however, discouraged from learning origin and insertions from a table in a review book. Instead, learning about origins and insertions should be a natural consequence of your studies. I suggest that for each muscle of a region you go to the skeleton and place a string indicating the anatomy of the muscle in question. Understand the action of the muscle based on the leverage provided by the string. In this manner you will learn about origin and insertions within the context of function. This will be a much better use of your time relative to studying a table of facts that is apt to haunt you at exam time when you are asked to think about functional anatomy.
